I love to listen to music that creates imagery in addition to having a really good melodic composition. One of the songs that forever made an impression on me, in addition to many hip hop artists from the golden era, was the song titled “Fragile,” by Sting. It speaks about the futility of war and the aims it seeks.
“If blood will flow
when flesh and steel are one
Drying in the color of the evening sun
Tomorrow’s rain will wash the stains away
But something in our minds will always stay
Perhaps this final act was meant
To clinch a lifetime’s argument
That nothing comes from violence and nothing ever could
For all those born beneath an angry star
Lest we forget how fragile we are
On and on the rain will fall
Like tears from a star
Like tears from a star
On and on the rain will say
How fragile we are
How fragile we are?”
by Sting
A great latin composition and great lyrics that cause you to think long after the song has spent it’s last note. This is what great art does when all of the ingredients come together and hit your senses, and sometimes sensibilities, with a lightening bolt of an impression.
I’ve included a clip from a youtube video of the song. If you have never heard this song before, close your eyes when you listen to it. The song doesn’t need a video to accompany it. The song’s lyrics are written video.
